Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association Announces 2019 Scholar-Athletes

Cambridge, Mass. (July 6) -- The Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA) has announced the Scholar-Athletes for the 2019 season as the MIT women's lightweight and openweight crew teams have combined for 17 selections.

To be eligible, each student-athlete must be in their second, third of fourth year of eligibility. The student-athletes also rowed in their institution's NCAA or IRA eligible boat(s) for a minimum of 75 percent of the current spring races or racing in a regional conference event. Academically, the student-athletes also have a 3.5 cumulative GPA or higher for their careers.

The lightweight team finished seventh at the 2019 IRA National Championship, while the openweight team placed sixth at the 2019 Patriot League Championship and fifth at the EAWRC Sprints.

For the lightweight team, senior Sophie Blackburn (Wichita, Kan.) is honored for the third time, with juniors Brigid Bane (Walpole, Mass.) and Eileen Hu (West Windsor, N.J.) selected for the second time in their careers. For the openweight program, senior Caitlin McCandler (St. Louis Park, Minn.) is a three-time honoree, while juniors Erica Flear (New York, N.Y.) and Aigneis Frey (New Canaan, Conn.) are two-time selections.
