MIT Rifle Picks Up Four Wins at Coast Guard

NEW LONDON, Conn. – In its last competition before hosting the Mid Atlantic Rifle Conference Championships next weekend, the MIT rifle team tuned up for the big meet with a match at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy along with the Wentworth Institute of Technology. The Engineers made the most of the opportunity, shooting a team season best score in smallbore and its second best air rifle score of the season to defeat both the Bears and Leopards in each discipline. 

Senior Nigel Kojimoto (Honolulu, Hawaii) and junior Elizabeth Phillips (Anchorage, Alaska) led the way for MIT in the smallbore competition, with each recording season-high scores. Phillips fired off a 562, a score that was second best among all shooters, with Kojimoto just behind with his 561. Senior Jennifer de Bruijn (Harare, Zimbabwe) carded a 540 for the Engineers, while senior Michael Bautista (Melbourne, Fla.) and junior Timothy Jenks (The Woodlands, Texas) added scores of 528 and 526 respectively to complete the team scoring.

Senior Christian Valledor (Ft. Leavenworth, Kan.) and sophomore Kaiying Liao (Issaquah, Wash.) also turned in season-high scores in smallbore for the Engineers. Valledor got off a 506; while Liao saw her season best score rise to 526.

Kojimoto also shot a season best score in air rifle, leading MIT and all competitors with a 576. Just one off her season-high, de Bruijn was second for the Engineers with a 568. Just behind her was Phillips, who matched her season best with a 562. Bautista and Valledor rounded out the team score for MIT with efforts of 537 and 536, with Valledor's score establishing yet another season best for the Engineers.

Liao made it two-for-two in setting season highs, establishing a new mark in air rifle as well with her 551. Jenks added a season-high in air rifle as well, firing a 536.

MIT will host the Mid Atlantic Rifle Conference Championships on Saturday, February 25.
