CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Competing for the first time in a month, the MIT Rifle team ended the 2012 portion of its 2012-13 schedule with a victory over Wentworth Institute of Technology in a match in which only air rifle was contested. MIT took the top three individual positions as the Engineers came away with a 2,258-2,107 victory.

As she has been doing all year, senior Elizabeth Phillips (Anchorage, Alaska) led the way for MIT by leading all shooters with a score of 583, narrowly missing on the school record of 587 that she shot last month. She started her day with a round of 99 and ended with back-to-back rounds of 98. Starting with a round of 98, junior Kaiying Liao (Issaquah, Wash.) set a new career best with her effort of 569, finishing second overall. Finishing third overall was freshman Sarah Wright (Christchurch, New Zealand), who's 558 was just two points shy of her season high mark.

A pair of Wentworth shooters had the next highest scores, as Matt Tracy and Mark Vollinger each fired 552 for the Leopards. Senior Timothy Jenks (The Woodlands, Texas) was just six points away from the top Wentworth shooters, finishing with a 548. Freshman Abra Shen (Toronto, Ontario) was MIT's other scoring shooter and she finished with a 492.

Also shooter for MIT was freshman David D'Achiardi (Bogotá, Colombia), who turned in a 552, and fellow freshman Joshua Emig (Las Vegas, Nev.) who finished with a 489.

MIT will take a break for the Holidays before returning to competition in January. Next up for the Engineers will be the annual Beanpot competition that will feature teams from Akron, Coast Guard, Penn State and Wentworth on January 25.
