MIT Rifle Takes Three of Four Team Wins at Beanpot

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – MIT turned in an impressive performance at the annual rifle Beanpot this weekend. The Engineers won three of the four-team titles that were up for grabs, taking both smallbore wins and one in air rifle. Senior Sarah Wright (Christchurch, New Zealand) had an outstanding outing, winning all four individual decisions that were up for grabs.

On Saturday, Wright totaled a season best 575 in small bore, including a 197 from the prone position. She bettered teammate, junior Jia Yi Goh (Singapore), for the individual honors by 12 points. The two led MIT to a team score of 2205, which bettered the second-place score of 2185 turned in by the U.S. Coast Guard Academy. Finishing third was Penn State (2051), followed SUNY Maritime (2011) and Canisus (1899). 

Senior Abra Shen (Toronto, Ontario) and junior Kelly Mathesius (Aurora, Ill.) posted top-10 finishes for the Engineers in smallbore, with Shen taking eighth with a 535 and Mathesius 10th with a total of 532. Senior Helen Liu (Homer, N.Y.) rounded out the scoring for MIT, also totaling a 532.

In air rifle Wright saw five of her six rounds score at 96 or better on her way to a 578. Goh was third for MIT, just two points behind with her 576. Mathesius also took home a top-10 finish, shooting a season-high 563 that was good for sixth overall. Liu was just two points behind Mathesius, finishing ninth with her 561.

Coast Guard took the team air rifle competition, finishing with a 2290 that bettered MIT's 2278. SUNY Maritime (2178) was third, followed by Penn State (2120), the Wentworth Institute of Technology (2109), and Canisus (1857). 

Sunday MIT and Coast Guard squared off again, with the Engineers winning both times against the Bears. In smallbore MIT outscored its opponent, 2212-2195, and took honors in air rifle, 2268-2252. Wright and Goh again went 1-2 in smallbore, putting up scores of 572 and 561 respectively. Sophomore David Bustillos (San Rafael, Calif.) was third for MIT with a 540, with Shen and Mathesius just behind with their totals of 538 and 539. 

In air rifle Wright and Goh both scored 580s to lead the way for the Engineers. Liu posted a 557 while Shen and Mathesius totaled a 551 and a 545.

MIT will return to the range on February 20 when it travels to Coast Guard for the NCAA Qualifier competition.
