CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Following a trip to New London, Connecticut this past weekend, the No. 5 MIT women's sailing team claimed fourth place out of 18 teams at the Emily Wick Trophy. The Engineers' team racing contingent was also in tow as they finished eighth at the New England Team Race Championship.
Senior Hanna Vincent (Santa Barbara, Calif.) and sophomore Lisa Sukharev-Chuyan (Temple, N.H.) captured second place in the B Division as they entered the top 10 in 12 of 14 rounds. The duo won the fourth and fifth races, was the runner-up in the last outing, and tallied a trio of third-place performances. In the B Division, sophomore Robyn Lesh (Everson, Wash.) along with juniors Laura Dunphy (Shelburne, Vt.) and Samantha Albright (Madison, Conn.) were 10th after seven top-10 finishes. Highlights for the trio included second place in the ninth race, third place in the 11th round, fifth place in the fifth rotation, and sixth place in the second outing of the regatta.
For the second weekend in a row, seniors David Alfonso (San Juan, Puerto Rico) and Iris Xu (Madison, Wis.), sophomores Joe Paggi (Bayville, N.J.) and Christopher Ford (Millbrae, Calif.), and freshmen Alec Stewart (Duxbury, Mass.) and Paige Omura (Honolulu, Hawaii) represented MIT in team racing action. At the New England Team Race Championship, the group produced a ledger of 4-7 to finish eighth out of 12 squads. The Engineers topped Boston College, the eventual third-place finisher, in addition to defeating Bowdoin College, U.S. Coast Guard Academy, and the University of Vermont.
This week, MIT will host the Midweek Firefly Invitational on Tuesday, April 8 and the two-day Oberg Trophy beginning on Saturday, April 12. The Cardinal and Gray will also travel to the Women's President's Trophy at Boston University as well as the Owen, Mosbacher, and Knapp Trophy at Yale this coming weekend.
