THE BASICS:

- Results: 4th of 18 - 164 points

- Location: Newport, R.I. (Sail Newport)

- The Lead: For the second time in four seasons, the MIT women's sailing team has qualified for the Intercollegiate Sailing Association (ICSA) National Championship Finals after taking fourth place at the National Semifinals today. The Engineers totaled 164 points just behind top finisher Yale University, Dartmouth College and the College of Charleston.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

- In the A Division, seniors Annie Hughes (Guilford, Conn.), Noa Yoder (New York, N.Y.) and Tiffany Xi (Foster City, Calif.) finished in ninth place with 92 of MIT's 164 points. The trio had a strong second day of action by winning race number 12 and finishing now lower than eighth over the final nine races to help MIT reach the national final.

- In the B Division, sophomore Emily Haig (Beach Haven, N.J.), first-year Dana Haig (Beach Haven, N.J.), junior Brooke McGoldrick (Southport, Conn.) and senior Sarah Caso (Duxbury, Mass.) finished in third place with 72 points. The quartet won race number nine and eleven and posted eight top-5 placements in the national semifinals.

- Junior Julia Cho (Cupertino, Calif.), first-year Maile Jim (Honolulu, Hawaii) and sophomore Kaila Pfrang (Suffolk, Va.) all served as reserves for the Engineers in the National Semifinal regatta.

WHAT THE COACHES ARE SAYING:

- Head Coach Matt Lindblad said, "After a rocky start on Tuesday morning, we battled back to end the day in 11th but in a pack of teams separated by only a few points for placings 8-12. Today, we executed our game plans and made some excellent choices throughout the day which allowed both divisions to maximize their boat speed and sailing acumen to climb from 11th to ultimately finish 4th in our very difficult semifinal bracket. The scorecard is wiped clean for the finals which begin tomorrow, and we look forward to great racing over the next two days."

UP NEXT:

- MIT begins competition in the National Final tomorrow morning at 10:00 am in Newport. The regatta will last until Friday so stay tuned for a full recap once all of the races have been completed.
