MEDFORD, Mass. - Skippers Brooks Reed and Josh Leighton and crew Ellie Hass, Vicki Lee, and Karlen Ruleman combined to lead the MIT sailing team to stunning fifth place finish out of 24 teams at the Hood Trophy hosted by Tufts University this past weekend.

With the breeze ranging from a low 2-5 knots northerly along beautiful Mystic Lake throughout the two-day event, the `B' squad of Leighton, Lee, and Ruleman finished third in their circuit, while the `A' duo of Reed and Hass placed eighth among the higher group. Each unit raced three rounds mostly on Saturday as low wind conditions allowed for only one `B' race on Sunday.

Overall, MIT finished above a host of other New England entries, including cross-town rival Harvard University, Boston College, Boston University, and Brown University.

Yale University won the event with a score of 13. Rounding out the top four were Salve Regina University, Connecticut College, and Tufts.

MIT also received an eighth-place finish out of 17 entries from Libby Palmer at the New England Women's Singlehanded Championship hosted by Connecticut College. Palmer's solid outing included a first-place slot in the final joust.
