WORCESTER, Mass. - MIT opened NEWMAC play on Saturday with a doubleheader sweep at Clark University. The Engineers pounded out 17 runs in the first tilt, before taking a 4-2 decision against the Cougars in the nightcap. The win marked MIT's fifth in a row.

The Engineers won the first game of the twinbill behind a 10-run first inning that produced only three hits. Four straight walks pre-emted a two-run double by freshman Kevin Wheeler that quickly blew the game open. Senior Mike Batty capped the explosive inning with a three-run homerun.

MIT completed the scoring with another monster output in the third. Warren Bates crushed a three-run bomb to open the scoring, before Kyle Zeller topped his teammate's effort with the season's first grand slam.

Mike Batty was commanding on the hill, surrendering only two runs over five innings, while striking out six.

In the second game, the score remained close as good pitching set the stage for both teams.

Trailing 2-1 in the bottom of the seventh, Kyle Zeller doubled home Duggan to knot the score. The Engineers took the lead on the next at bat, as Ricky Tydus reached base safely on an error, allowing Wheeler to cross the plate unscathed. MIT added another unearned run in the eighth to cap the scoring.

Rookie Jay Turner threw seven solid innings to grab the win, while Cliff Roscow pitched a perfect ninth to record the save.
