Box Score

NORTON, Mass. - MIT scored seven runs in the top of the eighth, but it wasn't enough to overcome a 17-hit onslaught by nationally-ranked Wheaton College, as the Lyons roared to their fourth straight conference win with an 11-10 victory against the MIT nine. Wheaton rallied from an early 3-0 deficit with 11 unanswered runs to escape becoming the Engineers' ninth victim in 10 games.

Three hits led to three runs for the Engineers in the top of the first. Kyle Zeller and Warren Bates kept pace with each other as Tech's top run producers with RBI hits, while MIT scored another run during a three-error inning for the Lyons.

Enduring the rocky start, Wheaton chipped away at the lead with runs in four straight innings. Freshman Jake Yagjian capped a three-run fourth with a two-run double that gave the Lyons their first lead of the game at 5-3. Fellow rookie Pat O'Conner extended Wheaton's lead to 7-3 with a two-run homer in the fifth.

After O'Conner connected on his second homerun of the game in the seventh, the Lyons added three more runs during the frame and moved ahead 11-3.

All but done, the Engineers prolific attack proved capable again of a big inning. Highlighted by Aaron Kent's three-run bomb, MIT scored seven times in the eighth. Zeller plated a pair of runs with a single, while Ricky Tydus drove home two more with his third triple of the season. Kevin Wheeler lined a pitch hard to right field in the ensuing at-bat to end the stanza, leaving the tying run at third.

Freshman Louie Bernardini struck out two batters en route to a perfect ninth and his first save of the season for Wheaton.

Cranking out 17 hits, the Lyons were led by O'Conner and Yagjian. O'Conner went 3-for-5 with four RBI, two runs, two homers and a stolen base. Yagjian was 2-for-4 with four RBI, two doubles and a walk.

For MIT, Zeller paced the bats with three hits, three RBI, two runs and a double, while Tydus went 2-for-5 with two RBI, a run and a triple.
