Baseball Wins Third Straight With 15-3 Victory Over Western New England

THE BASICS:

- Score: MIT 15, No. 22 Western New England 3

- Records: MIT (6-3); Western New England (8-5)

- Location: Hartford, Conn. (DiBenedetto Stadium - Trinity College)

- The Lead: A nine-run fifth inning put the MIT baseball team in front for good on Monday night as the Engineers came away with a 15-3 win over No. 22 ranked Western New England University. The win is the third straight for the Engineers, with the game being played at Trinity College in Hartford.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

- MIT took a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth as junior Max Lancaster (Attleboro, Mass.) scored on a single by center by junior David Heller (Fair Lawn, N.J.). Lancaster reached after being hit by a pitch, stole second and later came home for the run. The Engineers chased WNE starter Matt Thomas in the frame as Sean Halligan came on to get the last out of the fourth.

- The Golden Bears answered in the bottom of the inning as WNE loaded the bases on three straight walks. Ben Lacroix scored on a 6-4-3 double play, while Brian Valeriano singled to third to score Kevin Johnson for the 2-1 lead. Freshman Zachary Kopstein (Tiburon, Calif.) came on in relief of sophomore starter Patrick Callahan (Vicksburg, Mich.) to get the final out of the inning for MIT.

- The Engineers blew the game open with a nine-run fifth as MIT sent 14 people to the plate for the 10-2 lead. The scoring started with an RBI triple down the right field line by junior Austin Filiere (Chandler, Ariz.) that scored sophomore Jared Schwait (Boca Raton, Fla.). Two-RBI hits from Lancaster and junior Garrett Greenwood (Edmond, Okla.) led the offensive attack in the team's highest-scoring inning of the season. 

- Greenwood cleared the bases in the sixth with a three-RBI double down the left field line as the Engineers extended their lead out to 15-2. The Bears posted a single run in the bottom of the sixth, en route to the 15-3 final.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

- MIT's Kopstein earned his first career victory as he went 2.1 innings of one-hit relief with one walk and four strikeouts. Halligan dropped to 1-1 for the Bears in the loss, going one inning with three hits and eight runs allowed, with four earned. Overall, WNE used seven pitchers and issued 11 walks.

- Greenwood was 3-for-5 with five runs batted in, while Lancaster was 2-for-4 with three runs scored and two RBI. Schwait scored three runs and Filiere was 2-for-3 to go along with three walks.

- MIT is back in action on Thursday, March 30th as the Engineers travel to Endicott College for a 3:30 p.m. start in Beverly, Mass.
