Cambridge, Mass. (May 23) -- MIT junior shortstop Austin Filiere (Chandler, Ariz.) and freshman outfielder Matt Johnston (Portola Valley, Calif.) have both been honored as All-Region selections by ABCA/Rawlings and D3Baseball.com.
Filiere was named to the ABCA/Rawlings All-Region First Team for his performance in 2017 after he was also honored as the NEWMAC Player of the Year for the second time in his career. A D3Baseball.com Second Team All-Region selection with a .375 batting average, Filiere led the NEWMAC with a .794 slugging percentage, placing him 108 points higher than second in the league. He also posted a league-best .530 on-base percentage to go along with a league-leading 13 home runs, 108 total bases and 41 walks. A First Team All-Conference selection for the third time and the Baseball America Top Division III Draft Prospect, Filiere ended the season reaching base successfully in 64 straight games dating back to 2016, which is the third-longest streak in NCAA Division III history.
Johnston was named to the Third Team by the ABCA/Rawlings and Second Team by D3Baseball.com after an outstanding rookie campaign that saw him reach base safely in all 35 games he appeared in. The NEWMAC Rookie of the Year and a Second Team All-Conference honoree, Johnston led the team with a .401 batting average while posting 14 doubles, 57 hits, a .641 slugging percentage and a .443 on-base percentage. He also finished with 91 total bases, 33 runs scored and had a hit in 31 of 35 games played.
