  • Baseball Earns the 2018 ABCA Team Academic Excellence Award

    The MIT baseball team has been honored by the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) with the 2018 Team Academic Excellence Award. Teams from every level of college and high school baseball were recognized with this year's award, which highlights programs coached by ABCA members that posted a GPA over 3.0 on a 4.0 scale for the entire 2017-18 academic year. The Engineers, under the direction of head coach Andy Barlow, were one of nearly 300 member programs honored as the team has a team GPA of 3.59 on a 4.0 scale.
  • Johnston Named as Google Cloud Third Team Academic All-American

    Austin, Texas (June 5) -- MIT sophomore outfielder Matt Johnston (Portola Valley, Calif.) has been named to the 2018 Google Cloud Academic All-America Third Team, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). This program honors the nation’s top student-athletes for their combined performances athletically and in the classroom.
  • Greenwood Earns ABCA/Rawlings All-New England Honors

    Cambridge, Mass. (May 23) -- MIT baseball senior outfielder/pitcher Garrett Greenwood (Edmond, Okla.) added to his postseason awards as has been named to the ABCA/Rawlings New England All-Region Third Team as a utility player. Earlier in the week, he was named to the D3Baseball.com All-Region squad for the first time in his MIT career.

    Cambridge, Mass. (May 10) -- MIT baseball sophomore Matt Johnston (Portola Valley, Calif.) has been named to the Google Cloud Academic All-District Team, presented by CoSIDA. This was voted on by the region’s athletic communications directors.
  • Greenwood, Lancaster Earn NEWMAC All-Conference Honors

    Westwood, Mass. (May 9) -- MIT baseball seniors Garrett Greenwood (Edmond, Okla.) and Max Lancaster (Attleboro, Mass.) have each been named to the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) All-Conference Teams. Greenwood earns First Team honors for the first time in his career, while Lancaster was named to the Second Team for the first time.

    In a NEWMAC Tournament elimination game on Saturday morning, the No. 4 seeded MIT baseball team dropped a 6-5 final to No. 2 seeded Clark University as the Cougars rallied with two runs in the bottom of the eighth for the victory.

  • Baseball Celebrates Senior Day With Pair of Wins Over Springfield

    On Saturday, the MIT baseball team clinched the No. 4 seed in the upcoming NEWMAC Tournament as the Engineers defeated Springfield College by a 6-4 final in a game that was completed after being halted in March. In the scheduled non-conference game on Saturday, the Engineers defeated the Pride by a 10-9 final in 10 innings after the visitors forced the extra frame with a three-run ninth. Prior to the game, the Engineers honored this year's five seniors for their contributions to the program over their four-year careers in Cambridge.

    In the team’s final NEWMAC doubleheader of the regular season, the MIT baseball dropped a pair of games to Wheaton College as the Lyons swept the Engineers in the three-game series. The Lyons took game one in a tight 5-4 final before claiming game two by a 20-6 score.

    Led by seven extra-base hits and a dominant pitching performance from Dan Southerland, the Wheaton College baseball team defeated MIT by a final of 14-2 in the first of three games over the weekend. Southerland went eight innings, scattering five hits with one run as he improved to 5-1 on the season.
  • Baseball Rallies in Ninth for 7-6 Walkoff Win Over Coast Guard

    Trailing by a 6-3 margin heading to the ninth inning, the MIT baseball team scored four runs to rally past the U.S. Coast Guard Academy for an improbable 7-6 walkoff win at Fran O’Brien Field. The Engineers had tied the game at 6-6 and capped the rally as senior Max Lancaster (Attleboro, Mass.) singled to right field to bring in senior Garrett Greenwood (Edmond, Okla.) for the game-winning run.

    In a matchup of the top two teams in the NEWMAC East Division standings on Saturday afternoon, the MIT baseball team split a doubleheader with Babson College at Govoni Field. The Beavers took game one in a 6-0 shutout, while the Engineers were victorious in the second game by an 8-1 final.

    In the opening game of a three-game series between the NEWMAC East Division leaders, Babson College defeated the MIT Engineers by a 6-4 final on Friday afternoon at Fran O’Brien Field. The Beavers staked to an early 3-0 lead and held off a ninth-inning MIT rally for the win to pull a half game in front of the hosts heading to Saturday’s doubleheader.

    Led by a career day from senior Garrett Greenwood (Edmond, Okla.), the MIT baseball team ran its winning streak to six straight with a doubleheader sweep of visiting Emerson College on Saturday afternoon. Greenwood pitched seven innings with 11 strikeouts in game one, then became the MIT all-time career leader for hits with a single early in the second game.

    On a brutally cold Thursday afternoon, the MIT baseball team rallied from an early 3-0 deficit to come away with a 10-4 victory over Tufts University in non-conference play at Fran O’Brien Field. The Jumbos held a 4-2 lead heading to the bottom of the seventh inning before the Engineers scored the last eight runs of the game for the six-run win.

  • Baseball Outlasts Springfield in 17-Inning Marathon, Game Two Halted Due to Darkness

    In the longest game in MIT baseball history, the Engineers rallied from a 5-3 deficit in the bottom of the 17th for a dramatic 6-5 walkoff home win over Springfield College on Saturday afternoon. In game two, MIT grabbed a 6-4 lead with two runs in the bottom of the eighth before the game was halted due to darkness. The game will be completed at a date to be announced.
