  • Johnston Named to Google Cloud Academic All-America Second Team

    MIT baseball junior Matt Johnston (Portola Valley, Calif.) has been named to the Google Cloud Academic All-America Second Team, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Johnston is the 304th all-time Academic All-America honoree from MIT as the Engineers lead Division III and rank second all-time behind the University of Nebraska.

    MIT senior pitcher Patrick Callahan (Vicksburg, Mich.) has been selected to the College Division roster for the 45th Annual New England Intercollegiate Baseball Association (NEIBA) Joe Walsh All-Star Game. The game is slated to take placed at Noon on Friday, May 31st at Dunkin Stadium in Hartford, Conn.

    MIT baseball junior Matt Johnston (Portola Valley, Calif.) and senior Patrick Callahan (Vicksburg, Mich.) have been named to the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) and New England Intercollegiate Baseball Association (NEIBA) All-Region Teams. Johnston was named to the First Team, while Callahan is a Second Team All-New England performer.

    MIT junior outfielder Matt Johnston (Portola Valley, Calif.) has been named to the D3Baseball.com All-Region Second Team for the second time in his career. Posting a team-best .380 batting average, Johnston helped lead the Engineers to the 2019 NEWMAC Tournament Championship and a berth in the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2015.
  • Baseball Falls to NEC, Southern Maine at NCAA Regional on Saturday

    The 2019 MIT baseball season came to end on Saturday night as the Engineers dropped a 14-5 final to No. 3 ranked Southern Maine in an NCAA elimination game. Earlier in the day, MIT fell to New England College in a 6-5 contest as the Pilgrims rallied in the eighth inning.
  • Baseball Moves Into the Winner's Bracket With 5-4 Win Over Oswego State

    Jumping out to a 5-1 lead, the MIT baseball team has advanced into the winner’s bracket following a 5-4 victory over Oswego State in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on Friday night. This is the fifth NCAA Tournament appearance for the Engineers and first since the 2015 season.

    After capturing the NEWMAC Championship last week with an 8-2 win over No. 6 ranked Babson College, the MIT baseball team earned the league’s automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Tournament. This marks the program’s sixth trip to the NCAA Tournament as the Engineers will open up play on Friday vs. Oswego State. The regional will be hosted by the University of Southern Maine.

Earning All-Conference honors are junior Matt Johnston (Portola Valley, Calif.), junior Thomas Allison (Kingwood, Texas), senior Patrick Callahan (Vicksburg, Mich.) and sophomore Casey Bussone (Danvers, Mass.). In addition, Callahan was selected for the NEWMAC All-Sportsmanship Team.

The championship is the third for MIT and the program’s first since the Engineers won their second straight NEWMAC title in 2015.

    Trailing by an early 3-0 margin, the No. 4 seeded MIT baseball team advanced into the winner’s bracket of the NEWMAC Tournament with a 10-8 road win over top-seeded Wheaton College on Friday afternoon. A four-run seventh inning keyed the offensive attack for MIT as the Engineers had four players with multiple hits in the game. Wheaton is currently ranked No. 15 in the D3baseball.com and ABCA/Collegiate Baseball National Polls.
  • Baseball Moves On With a 7-6 Walkoff Win Over Springfield in the NEWMAC First Round

    Trailing 6-2 in the ninth, the MIT baseball team tied the game on a three-run homer by junior Matt Johnston (Portola Valley, Calif.) and won the game on an RBI single by sophomore Ethan Rolland (Burke, Va.) in the bottom of the 12th for a 7-6 victory over Springfield College. The No. 4 seeded Engineers now advance to the double-elimination portion of the tournament at top-seeded Wheaton College.

The Engineers trailed 3-1 heading into the sixth before the Beavers struck for nine runs in the next two innings to take command of the first game of the three-game series.

    MIT jumped out to a 13-4 lead after four innings before the Bears tied the game with nine runs in the fifth and the U.S. Coast Guard Academy eventually came away with the 21-15 NEWMAC victory on Tuesday afternoon. The game was called after eight innings due to darkness as heavy rain was also beginning to spread into the area.

    Led by a 4-for-5 outing from junior Matt Johnston (Portola Valley, Calif.), the MIT baseball team pulled out a 3-2 final over Endicott College in 11 innings on Sunday afternoon. MIT has now won four straight and eight of the last 10 to move to 13-7-1 overall.
