Cambridge, Mass. (May 9) -- MIT baseball junior Matt Johnston (Portola Valley, Calif.) has been named as a Google Cloud Academic All-District honoree for the second straight season, as announced by CoSIDA on Thursday afternoon.
The 2019 Google Cloud Academic All-District Baseball and Softball Teams, selected by CoSIDA, recognize the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances on the field and in the classroom.
A physics major with a 4.7 GPA (on MIT's 5.0 scale), Johnston leads the NEWMAC in at-bats (175), runs scored (45), runs batted in (54) and total bases (112) while starting all 40 games for the Engineers. He is also fourth in home runs (10), slugging percentage (.640) and batting average (.383), fifth in triples (5), seventh in on-base percentage (.452), eighth in stolen bases (17) and 10th in walks (21).
In MIT's run to the NEWMAC Championship, Johnston hit .600 over the five games with 10 runs scored and eight runs batted in. In the championship game, he finished 4-for-5 with three runs scored and three runs batted in as he hit his 10th home run of the year.
First-team Academic All-District honorees advance to the Google Cloud Academic All-America ballot. First-, second- and third-team (when selected) Academic All-America honorees will be announced in June.
The Division II and III Google Cloud Academic All-America programs are partially financially supported by the NCAA Division II and III national governance structures to assist CoSIDA with handling the awards fulfillment aspects for the 2018-19 Divisions II and III Academic All-America programs.
Google Cloud Academic All-America teams will be announced as following: June 3 (NAIA), June 4 (NCAA Division III), June 5 (NCAA Division II) and June 6 (NCAA Division I).
