Baseball To Open NCAA Tournament vs. Oswego State on Friday

Indianapolis, Ind. (May 13) -- After capturing the NEWMAC Championship last week with an 8-2 win over No. 6 ranked Babson College, the MIT baseball team earned the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Tournament. This marks the program's sixth trip to the NCAA Tournament as the Engineers will open up play on Friday vs. Oswego State. The regional will be hosted by the University of Southern Maine.

MIT, under the direction of head coach Andy Barlow, enters the NCAA Tournament with a record of 22-17-1 overall. In the NEWMAC Tournament, the Engineers trailed by a 6-3 margin with two outs in the ninth inning of the first round before rallying and eventually capturing the league tournament with a win over No. 6 ranked Babson.

Senior pitcher Patrick Callahan (Vicksburg, Mich.) was named as the NEWMAC Tournament Most Outstanding Player after throwing a pair of complete games. Offensively, junior Matt Johnston (Portola Valley, Calif.) leads the team with a .383 batting average with 67 hits, 45 runs, 10 home runs and 54 runs batted in. Junior catcher Thomas Allison (Kingwood, Texas) has 21 extra-base hits, including a team-leading 11 home runs to go along with 52 runs batted in and a .317 batting average.
