Johnston Named to the All-Region Second Team

Cambridge, Mass. (May 25) -- MIT junior outfielder Matt Johnston (Portola Valley, Calif.) has been named to the All-Region Second Team for the second time in his career. Posting a team-best .380 batting average, Johnston helped lead the Engineers to the 2019 NEWMAC Tournament Championship and a berth in the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2015.

A NEWMAC Second Team All-Conference honoree, Johnston led the NEWMAC in hits (71), runs batted in (57) and total bases (119) while ranking second in runs (46). He was also third in the league and tied for the team lead in home runs with 11 as 23 of his hits went for extra bases. Johnston led the Engineers and was third in the league with his .380 average, along with ranking third in the league in slugging percentage at .636 and sixth in on-base percentage at .449.

Johnston finished the season with 20 multi-hit games, including batting .600 over a five-game stretch in the NEWMAC Tournament with 10 runs scored and eight runs batted in. He reached base safely in 39 of 43 games, including the last 10 games of the season through the NCAA Tournament.
