Westwood, Mass. (November 9) -- The MIT men's basketball team, coming off the program's fifth New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Championship a year ago, have been chosen as the favorites in this year's NEWMAC Preseason Coaches Poll with six first-place votes. The Engineers, who are receiving votes in the D3Hoops.com Preseason National Poll, are again under the direction of 23rd-year head coach Larry Anderson.
The Engineers return a number of starters from last year's team, including junior AJ Jurko (Weston, Fla.), who was a First Team All-Conference honoree and the NEWMAC Defensive Player of the Year. Junior Bradley Jomard (Paris, France) was the team's leading scorer a season ago at 15.2 points per game and also registered just the second triple-double in program history in a road win at Wheaton. Juniors Cameron Korb (Los Gatos, Calif.) and Dakota Pierce (Thousand Oaks, Calif.) started 13 and 20 games, respectively, in 2016-17 and combined for nearly 22 points per game.
The Engineers earned the program's seventh all-time berth in the NCAA Division III Tournament and finished with an overall mark of 21-7 and 11-3 in NEWMAC play.
MIT travels to Division I Harvard University on Friday, November 10th for an exhibition game beginning at 7 p.m., followed by the 2017-18 season opener at home on Wednesday, November 15th vs. Bridgewater State University. That game is a 7 p.m. tipoff at Rockwell Cage.
