Columbia Rows Past MIT to Take Alumni Cup

BRONX, N.Y. – MIT and No. 13 Columbia squared off with their heavyweight rowing teams for the rights to the Alumni Cup in the first outing of the spring for the Engineers. On a cold and blustery day it was Columbia that came out on top to win the cup in a race that also had crews from No. 17 Dartmouth and Holy Cross on the 2,000-meter course.

Starting the race in a relatively strong crosswind, the Lions started to pull away after 700 meters and the Engineers could not make up ground on their counterparts. Columbia went on to take the race, finishing a little more than five seconds ahead of Dartmouth. Holy Cross was third with MIT crossing the line in fourth.

MIT fared better in the freshman race, in which the same four schools fielded crews.  Dartmouth wound up the winner, with Columbia and MIT even for most of the race until the final 500 meters when the Lions were able to pull slightly ahead and finish ahead of the Engineers for second by less than a boat length.

MIT will return to its home waters of the Charles River next weekend when it will take on crews from Bates College, Boston College and Trinity College on Saturday, April 7.
