MIT Heavyweight Crew Fares Well at Head of the Charles

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - On a blue-skied, sunny Saturday in Cambridge, the MIT men's heavyweight crew opened its 2013-14 season at the 49th annual Head of the Charles Regatta. Tech entered a Club Eights boat in the regatta that competed on the first day and a Championship Eights boat that raced the following day.

Racing against crews from the states, Ireland and the Netherlands, the MIT Club Eights boat started things off. Tech started with a split of 3:35 at Riverside and reached the next checkpoint at Weld in a time of 5:06. The Engineers picked up the pace to take 32nd place in a time of 16:16.999.

On the final day of the regatta, the Championship Eights boat finished in 29th out of the 32 boats that were entered in the event with its time of 16:16.012, finishing almost 20 seconds ahead of the Rutgers University boat that came in 30th.

Tech will return to the water next Sunday, Oct. 27 at the Princeton Chase. The Engineers will compete in two other regattas this fall before taking a five month break in anticipation of the spring season.
