CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The men's lightweight team traveled to Pelham, N.Y. this past weekend to take on Eastern Sprints rivals Columbia University, Cornell University, and Georgetown University. Although the squad has seen considerable increases in speed over the past month, it would not be enough to bring home the cup. However, the Engineers didn't leave New York empty handed as the freshman 4+ comprised of Nathan Miller, David Couto, Derek Kita, Antuan Weeks, and Henry Skupniewicz finished 10 seconds ahead of Columbia and 13 seconds in front of Georgetown to secure the victory.
MIT placed fourth in both the varsity and freshman eight races. In the varsity competition, the Engineers trailed Columbia closely during the first 1000m before falling behind in the third 500m, ultimately finishing 19 seconds behind Columbia and 24 seconds off the leader, Cornell. The freshman eight was within striking distance of Georgetown for the majority of the race before falling back in the last 500m, clocking in 12 seconds behind the Hoyas and 29 seconds behind an extremely fast Columbia crew.
