CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - On Sunday, Oct. 21, the MIT lightweight men return to competition for the start of their 2007-2008 campaign at the 43rd Head of the Charles Regatta. Its an auspicious start to the season, as the varsity lights compete in the men's lightweight eight against EARC foes and a strong class of international oarsmen.
Starting first is Rowing Canada, the strong Canadian squad recently returned from the '07 World Championships, followed by the New York Athletic Club and then Hollandia RC - the Dutch lightweight entry to this year's Head of the Charles. Look for the Tech lightweights starting in the 22nd position behind 2007 EARC Sprints Champions Dartmouth College (#20) and Trent University (#21), and ahead of Yale University (#23) and Marquette University (#24).
Selection for this years race was finalized over the weekend. Canadian Henley Champion and senior Maria Telleria will take the reins in the coxswain position with Russell Ryan at stroke, followed by Raphael Peterson, Andrzej Wojciesznski, co-captain Bill Garthwaite, Nick Bushak, co-captain Aaron Blankstein, Ryan Flynn, and Ryan Daspit.
The lightweights will also field a freshmen eight in the club eight event on Saturday. This year's entry will include lightweight recruits in their first collegiate race. MIT will start with bow number 66 following WPI Rowing (#64) and Castleconnell BC (#65) and followed by Drummoyne RC (#67) and Rocky Mountain Rowing Club (#68).
Friends and Alumni are welcome to come by Pierce Boathouse over the weekend to cheer the Cardinal and Gray.
