MIT Fencing Goes 2-4 at Brandeis Beanpot

WALTHAM, Mass. – The MIT men's and women's fencing teams travelled to Brandeis University last night for the annual mid-week Beanpot. The three-rounded competition featured the Engineers squaring off with teams from Harvard, Boston College and Brandeis. The women's team scored the two victories of the tournament, edging out BC 14-13 and tipping Brandeis by a 15-12 score.

The women's sabre team swept all three of its opponents en route to a 20-7 record, including an 8-1 victory over Boston College. Robin Shin lost only one bout while picking up eight victories, while fellow sabre Molly Kozminsky dropped only two of her nine bouts. Epee took a 6-3 win over Brandeis while compiling a 12-15 record over the night, thanks to several wins from Kirsten Hessler and Kristin Kuhn. Foil were not able to win a match, but got three victories from Jenna Caldwell in a 5-4 loss to Brandeis, important points in MIT's ability to win the overall match.

The men's team fell by an 18-9 score at the hands of the Eagles and 19-8 to the Harvard Crimson. They were unable to salvage a point against the hosts, as Brandeis grabbed a 17-10 victory.

Men's epee chipped in with 6-3 victories over Boston College and Harvard while foil topped Brandeis by the same score. Joseph Rafidi lost two matches while picking up seven victories for epee, while Jackson Crane swept his matches in both of the Engineer's victories, leading to a 6-3 personal record.

In foil, Daniel  Levine swept his bouts against Brandeis and added a victory against Harvard, while Benjamin Nield took two three points for the Engineers. Maximilian Brand won three of the four bouts in which the sabre team claimed victory.

The Engineers will gear up for the New England Championships, which will take place on Sunday February 27th. March will bring their final events of the season, the NCAA Northeast Regional and National Championships.
