MIT Opens Season at The Big One

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Igor Kopylov led the charge for the MIT men’s fencing team by capturing fifth place in sabre at The Big One held this past weekend. Freshman Daniel Levine finished sixth in foil, marking the Engineers’ best outing since 2005 when Spencer Sugimoto and Benjamin Switala placed first and fifth, respectively. Gabriel Chan equaled his career-best performance by tying for seventh place in epee action.

Maximilian Brand bolstered MIT’s efforts in sabre with a 12th-place finish as Rangarajan Nadadur claimed the 18th spot. Vinayak Ramesh (28th) and Isaac Businger (40th) rounded out the squad.

The remaining members of the foil team finished closely together, with Switala leading the way at 16th, followed by Richard LaGrandier (18th), and Benjamin Nield (20th). Chrisantha Perera claimed the 36th slot while Siraj Ali ranked 51st.

In epee, Matt Gethers placed 19th while Damon Henry posted the next finish at 30th. Carter Chang placed two spots behind him as Javier Ordonez (44th) and Kieran Mclaughlan (T-70th) closed out the day.
