Men's Fencing Opens Season at The Big One

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -Igor Kopylov captured first place in the sabre standings this past weekend at The Big One hosted by Smith College. The sophomore improved upon his second-place finish last year and became the first member of the sabre squad to take the top spot since Brian Bower in the 1998-99 season.

Namit Setia placed eighth in sabre action while Raymond Wu finished in 16th place. Nurzhas Makishev (36th), Matt Farrell (48th), and Daniel Whalen (55th) rounded out Tech's sabre representatives.

MIT netted a pair of top-10 finishes in the epee pool as Gabriel Chan claimed seventh place and Lukas Schmitt took ninth. Matt Gethers earned a 12th-place ranking as Trevor Chang finished 24th. Jeremy Hurwitz (25th) and Javier Ordonez (35th) recorded the final rankings for the Engineers.

The members of the foil team finished closely together, with Spencer Sugimoto leading the way at 12th. Jason Chen took 16th as Benjamin Switala came in right behind him. Sebastian Castro captured 25th place, followed by Michael Yee (26th), and Jason Chan (36th).
