Engineers Fall to Wheaton, 2-1, in NEWMAC Men’s Soccer Semifinal

BABSON PARK, Mass. – Third-seeded Wheaton College scored two goals in the final 29 minutes to rally from a 1-0 deficit and defeat second-seeded MIT, 2-1, in the semifinals of the 2010 New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Men's Soccer Tournament at Babson College's Hartwell-Rogers Field on Saturday.

With the victory, the Lyons advance to Sunday's championship game at 1 p.m., where they will meet top-seeded Babson in a rematch of last year's final. Babson topped Wheaton, 2-1, last fall to earn their second straight conference championship.

After a scoreless first half, MIT (10-3-2) netted the game's first goal on a penalty kick early in the second period. Following a Wheaton foul in the box on a corner kick, Jonathan Tebes blasted the PK into the lower right corner for his fourth goal of the season at 55:35.

Wheaton (11-5-3) answered in the 62nd minute, as Josh Solomon scored off a rebound of his own blocked shot to even the contest at 1-1 at 61:12. The game then remained tied until the final seven minutes, when Yuri Moreira converted a pass from classmate Alex Redding for his team-leading eighth goal of the season at 83:12.

MIT would put up four shots in the final six minutes, but the Wheaton defense blocked two of the Engineers' bids and goalie Chris Smart made a clean save on another. MIT's Joey DeRosa had one last bid to tie the game with three minutes remaining, but his shot attempt from 20 yards out went high as Wheaton held on for the 2-1 victory.

Smart finished with four saves in the win for Wheaton, while Dylan Rankin made eight stops in defeat for MIT.
