WORCESTER, Mass. – Visiting MIT got a goal from senior Zach Kabelac (Potomac, Md.) in the 35th minute and the defense made sure it held up as the Engineers captured a 1-0 victory over Clark University in a NEWMAC men's soccer game on Saturday. The decision also helped the Cardinal and Gray clinch a spot in the conference tournament to be held in November.

MIT controlled play for most of the match, peppering the Cougars with 21 shots, 12 of which were turned back by Clark netminder Ryan King. Senior Dylan Rankin (Providence, R.I.) came away with two saves and his first shutout of the season.

Kabelac's team-leading seventh marker of the season came at the 34:52 mark off touches from junior Ben Lewis (West Hartford, Conn.) and freshman Nick Diamantoni (Belle Mead, N.J.).

The Engineers had opportunities to increase their lead in the second half but some spectacular stops by King – including a diving deflection on an Alexander Dago (Chicago, Ill.) attempt that still banged off the post kept the Cougars' hopes alive.

Clark put pressure on the MIT defense in the final minutes but failed to come up with a scoring chance.

MIT (7-6, 2-3 NEWMAC) returns to action on Monday, Oct. 24 when it hosts Wentworth Institute of Technology.
