Box Score

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - Chris Desrochers scored his second goal of the game with just over two minutes remaining to propel MIT (1-0-0) to a 3-2 win in its 2006 season opener over Fontbonne University (0-1-0). The match marked the first time the two squads had ever met.

The Cardinal and Gray held the majority of the possession throughout the opening stages and managed to turn it into its first goal of the season in the 10th minute. Andrew Bishara slotted a perfectly weighted through ball which Desrochers got to just before onrushing Fontbonne keeper Jess Jobe arrived. The speedy midfielder rounded the keeper and deposited the ball in the back of the empty net for the 1-0 lead.

However, MIT's lead didn't last long, as good work between Dane Arand and Kevin Vonarx pulled the Griffins level in the 12th minute. Arand played the ball across the face of the goal for Vonarx to redirect into the net.

The Engineers regained the lead before halftime through a brilliant individual goal by Ryan Sheffler. After taking a corner kick, the Engineer captain found the ball cleared back to him at the top of the 18-yard box and he wasted no time firing a shot just inside the near post to make it 2-1.

Arand pulled the Griffins even once more in the 54th minute, as the team from Missouri failed to give up. However, it was the boys from Massachusetts who ultimately emerged victorious. Fontbonne had a player ejected for receiving his second yellow card late in the game and MIT took full advantage of its extra man. A great passing sequence built up to the decisive third goal, the ball finally finding its way into the net off the foot of Desrochers with an assist credited to Dylan Wright.

The Engineers out-shot the Griffins, 23-11, with both Desrochers and Alex Morgan tallying six shots apiece. Tom Caldwell got the win, making three saves in net. Jess Jobe made six saves for Fontbonne, several of which were of the spectacular variety.

MIT next takes the field on Tuesday, Sept. 5 at 4:00 p.m. when it travels to Newport, R.I. to take on Salve Regina. Fontbonne next plays on Sunday, Sept. 3 at 1:00 p.m. against Wheaton College.
