BOSTON, Mass. – Following its 190-110 victory over Tufts University on Saturday, the MIT men's swimming and diving team picked up two New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) weekly awards on Monday. The 400-yard freestyle relay collected Relay of the Week honors, while sophomore Bo Mattix (La Canada, Calif.) was named Co-Swimmer of the Week. This is the fourth time this season that the Engineers have earned both Swimmer and Relay of the Week at the same time.
Tech's 400-yard freestyle A relay ended the meet by touching in first place with a time of 3:07.45. The relay, which was made up of juniors Austin Fathman (Hamilton, Mich.) and Brendon Chiu (Monterey Park, Calif.), sophomore Daryl Neubieser (Saratoga, Calif.) and senior Remy Mock (Victoria, British Columbia), won the event by over seven seconds.
Mattix swam well against the Jumbos, ending the day with three victories. He started the meet off as the backstroke leg of the 200-yard medley relay that touched three seconds ahead of the competition with a time of 1:33.28. He then went on to win both the 100-yard backstroke and the 200-yard backstroke with times of 51.89 and 1:53.12 respectively. He was also named the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference (ECAC) Swimmer of the Week.
MIT has a busy week ahead; the Cardinal and Gray will travel to Williamstown, Mass. on Friday, Jan. 24 to face Williams College at 4:00 p.m., before returning home to host Amherst College on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
