CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Playing for the first time since Loughborough University visited Cambridge for the Trans-Atlantic Challenge last week, the MIT men's tennis team defeated Vassar College, 8-1, inside the J.B. Carr Tennis Bubble on Friday afternoon.
The Engineers swept doubles play as senior Kevin Wang (Havertown, Pa.) and freshman Tyler Barr (Auburn Township, Ohio) topped the Brewers' No. 1 pairing of senior Daniel Cooper (Piedmont, Calif.) and freshman Nick Zuczek (Westerly, R.I.) by an 8-3 score.
MIT freshman Sean Ko (Danville, Calif.) and junior Avi Walden (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y.) got a similar result against Vassar senior Evan Udine (Delray Beach. Fla.) and sophomore Gray Thurstone (Louisville, Ky.) at the No. 3 position, while freshman Alex Cauneac (Severna Park, Md.) and sophomore Bryan Lilley (Edmond, Okla.) earned a hard fought win, 8-5, over junior Juan Felipe Laso (Quito, Ecuador) and classmate Alexander Luckmann (Berkeley, Calif.) at No. 2 to take all three doubles matches.
In singles, MIT won its five matches all in straight sets. Ko defeated Udine 6-0, 6-1 at No. 2, while senior Dennis Garcia (Corpus Christi, Texas) took claimed the No. 3 position 6-1, 6-4 over Udine. Junior Kenny Gea (Irvine, Calif.) bested his opponent 6-2, 6-2, while senior Jeffrey Bu (Arcadia, Calif.) and freshman Henry La Soya (Los Angeles, Calif.) rounded out the list of winners for the Engineers this evening.
Bu took the No. 5 singles point 6-3, 6-2 and La Soya closed the match with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over senior Sha Huang (Austin, Texas) at No. 6.
Both teams return to action tomorrow afternoon. MIT (5-3) opens New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play at Springfield College for a 12:00 p.m. start time, while Vassar (6-10) continues its road trip with a match against Brandeis University at 10:00 a.m. and Emerson College at 4:00 p.m.
