WESTWOOD, Mass. (February 15) – After winning its 19th straight New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Championship and reaching the NCAA regional final for the second year in a row last season, the No. 21 nationally-ranked MIT men's tennis team has been selected first once again in the league's 2018 preseason poll, which was released this afternoon.
Behind MIT, which received six of the seven first place votes, was 2017 NEWMAC runner-up Babson College followed by Coast Guard, Springfield College, Clark University, Wheaton College and Emerson College.
In 2017, MIT finished with an overall record of 18-56, went undefeated in conference play for the 20th time and made its way through the NEWMAC postseason tournament with a 5-0 win over Springfield and a 6-0 win over Babson to claim its 19th league title. The Engineers earned the team's 21st berth to the NCAA last season as they defeated No. 40 Stevens, 5-1, in the second round before falling to Bowdoin, 5-0, in the regional final.
MIT, ranked No. 21 in the latest Oracle/Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Division III men's tennis national poll, returns 2017 Singles All-American Tyler Barr (Chagrin Falls, Ohio) as well as NEWMAC All-Conference honorees Alex Cauneac (Severna Park, Md.), Albert Go (Merritt Island, Fla.), Sean Ko (Danville, Calif.) and Victor Cheng (Santa Monica, Calif.). Additionally, MIT added three freshmen to the roster of 11 student-athletes for the 2018 campaign.
The Engineers will open their spring season this coming Saturday at home with a pair of matches, the first against Division II Merrimack College at 1:00 p.m. and the second against Division I Boston University at 5:00 p.m. In total, MIT will face-off against seven teams ranked inside the top-25 national poll including No. 3 Middlebury, No. 4 Bowdoin, No. 8 Amherst, No. 17 Tufts, No. 19 Bates, No. 20 Brandeis and No. 24 Skidmore.
