Westwood, Mass. (April 9) – MIT men's tennis junior Tyler Barr (Chagrin Falls, Ohio), sophomore Albert Go (Merritt Island, Fla.) and freshman Michael Zhao (Princeton Junction, N.J.) have all earned New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) weekly awards as the league office announced its selections this morning. Barr was named as the NEWMAC Singles Athlete of the Week, while Go and Zhao earned NEWMAC Doubles Team of the Week honors.
The trio of Engineers guided the Engineers to a 2-0 week, which included an 8-1 win over Vassar and a 9-0 shutout victory over Clark to open NEWMAC play
As MIT's No. 1 singles player, Barr, who earned his second career NEWMAC Singles Athlete of the Week award this week, defeated David Gandham of Vassar, 6-2, 6-0 on Friday and then blanked Jose Dalla-Valle of Clark, 6-0, 6-0 on Saturday. The junior also went 2-0 in doubles action to account for four of MIT's 17 points this weekend.
Go and Zhao teamed up at No. 2 doubles for the MIT men's tennis team this week and went 2-0 only conceding a total of five games. Go and Zhao began the week with an impressive 8-1 win over Vassar's Dom Demeterfi and Robin Drummond before defeating Clark's Christian Ruebens and Jack Han, 8-4, to earn the team's first NEWMAC win of the spring.
MIT (4-4, 1-0 NEWMAC) welcomes Wheaton College to Cambridge on Wednesday for a NEWMAC match, which is slated to begin at 4:00 p.m.
