WESTWOOD, Mass. (April 19) – Six student-athletes from the No. 25 MIT men's tennis team have been named to the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Men's Tennis Academic All-Conference Team, as announced by the league office this afternoon. The Engineers led the conference with six of the 16 selections this spring. Springfield had the second-most honorees with four.
Juniors Tyler Barr (Chagrin Falls, Ohio), Alex Cauneac (Severna Park, Md.), Sean Ko (Danville, Calif.) and Henry La Soya (Los Angeles, Calif.) earned NEWMAC Academic All-Conference honors for the second time in their careers, while sophomores Albert Go (Merritt Island, Fla.) and Nate Newhouse (New York, N.Y.) were placed on the NEWMAC Academic All-Conference teams for the first time in their respective careers.
To be eligible, a student-athlete must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.5/4.0 scale or 4.35/5.0 scale after the 2017 fall semester, achieved second year academic status at her institution, and been a member of the varsity team for the entire season.
Ko leads the Engineers with ten wins this season (10-7), while Barr has eight (8-6), Go has seven (7-6), Cauneac has four (4-5), La Soya has three (3-1) and Newhouse has one (1-0). As a team, MIT is undefeated in NEWMAC play and the six student-athletes above have combined for a mark of 14-0 in their respective matches.
MIT (7-5, 4-0 NEWMAC) heads to No. 17 Brandeis University for a non-conference match this afternoon at 3:00 p.m.
