Marx, Cooper and Distance Medley Relay Qualify for Nationals at Valentine’s Invite

BOSTON, Mass. – In its final weekend of competition before the upcoming New England Division III Championship, the MIT men's track and field team took part in a pair of local meets. The Engineers were in action at Boston University's annual Valentine's Invitational as well as their own home Coed Invite. Both meets were non-scoring competitions, so the focus was on individual Championship qualifying performances.

Patrick Marx was able to secure one such qualification, reaching the NCAA Provisional standard in the 800. Marx finished in 1:52.49, the second-fastest time in program history at that distance, to place 11th in the meet. Marx finished just three-tenths of a second off the automatic qualifying mark.

MIT's other National level performance came from the Distance Medley Relay. The group of four sophomores started off the weekend, running on Friday afternoon, with an historic effort. Logan Trimble, Daniel Ronde, Marx and Kyle Hannon set a new Institute record while automatically qualifying for the NCAA Division III Championship with their time of 9:52.13, which was good for third overall at the meet. Tech's other relay, the 4x400 quartet of Ronde, Marx, Mac Gager and Jacob Jurewicz, narrowly missed a provisional qualification with their time of 3:21.34.

Hannon was also impressive on Saturday in the 1000 meters, as the sophomore led a group of four Tech runners in the top 30. Hannon finished in 2:27.12, the second fastest time in program history. Trimble (2:28.76), Richard Prevost (2:29.26) and Justin Bullock (2:30.51) each posted times that rank among the ten-best all-time.

Kenneth Cooper had a strong showing in the weight throw back at MIT on Saturday. Cooper came within four inches of the automatic standard with his toss of 61-2.00 feet.

MIT will look to capture its 11th Indoor Regional Championship next weekend. Springfield College will host the Championship, which begins on Friday at 3:00 p.m.
