Men's Track and Field in 2nd after Day Two of N.E. Div. III Champs

WATERVILLE, Maine – The MIT men's track and field team completed the first official day of competition at the New England Division III Championships at Colby College on Friday afternoon in second place with 19 points after a number of high-placing finishes. Bates College leads the way with 42 points.

Freshman Adrian Samsel (Whippany, N.J.) was the lone MIT athlete to compete in the decathlon on the first day of competition. After completing half of the events on Thursday, he sat in first place with 3,350 points, finishing in second place in the 100m (11.49) and the High Jump (1.83m) and first in the Long Jump (6.52m). He also had sixth place finishes in the Shot Put (10.20m) and 400m (51.61).

In the remaining five events on Friday, Samsel finished fourth in the 110m Hurdles (16.36), ninth in the Discus Throw (88-05) and Pole Vault (9-04.50), eighth in the Javelin Throw (111-00) and sixth in the 1500m (4:34.04). Samsel ended the day with a seventh place finish with 5,843 points and a new MIT freshman record.

After the completion of the decathlon, freshmen Arinze Okeke (Hawthorne, Calif.) and Carrington Motley (Pittsburgh, Pa.) took part in the Long Jump. Okeke finished in 11th place with a jump of 20-08.00, while Motley came in 18th with a 19-11.50.

MIT saw five runners finish in the top ten in the 10,000m. Junior Roy Wedge (Lawrence, Kan.) led the way with his second place finish, crossing the line in 31:24.53. Sophomore Benji Xie (El Dorado Hills, Calif.) followed in fourth with his time of 31:25.62 and classmate Allen Leung (Arcadia, Calif.) was sixth in 31:47.08. Fellow sophomore Matthew Jordan (Matthews, N.C.) was eighth with a 31:49.47 and freshman Matthew Deyo completed the race directly after him in ninth place with a time of 31:49.65.

The Engineers will wrap up competition at the N.E. Div. III Championships tomorrow, with both field and running events beginning at 10:00 a.m.
