NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The MIT men's track and field sprinters had great success at the Yale Invitational yesterday afternoon at the Cuyler Field and Dwyer Track. In eight sprint events, the Engineers' won four events, and placed in the top three in the other four. All track events took place outdoors, but because of the poor weather, all jumpers were moved indoors.
Senior States Lee (Charlotte, N.C.) claimed first in the 200-meter dash with a time of 22.72, took second in the 400-meter dahs in 48.77 and helped the 4x100-meter relay team comprised of sophomore Livingston Albritten (Plano, Texas), senior Michael Kaba (Jackson, N.J.) and junior Danny Newman (St. Charles, Ill.) to the win in 42.97-seconds.
Behind Lee was classmate Derek Barnes (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.), who placed third in both the 200m (23.32) and the 400m (501.12) dash events. Cardinal and Gray freshman Tom Frejowski (Chicago, Ill.) crossed the line fourth in the 400m in 51.87 and junior Brandon Corts (Arlington, Va.) was fifth in 52.47-seconds.
Albritten led things off for MIT with a second place finish in the 100-meter dash in 11.27-seconds, while freshman Jarod Wilson (Newark, Del.) won the 800-meter run in 1:55.62.
In the hurdles, sophomore Chris Sweeney (Woodland Park, N.J.) won the 400-meter event in a time of 54.83 and was the runner up in the 110-meter event in 15.37-seconds. Kaba was third in both the 110m hurdles (15.65) and the 400m hurdles (55.21).
Kaba then teamed up with Wilson, Albritten and Newman for third place in the 4x400-meter relay with a time of 3:28.33.
Sophomore William Ruschel (Bethel Park, Pa.) claimed the only win for the Engineers in the field events. The sophomore leapt a height of 46-feet, 4.25-inches (14.13m) in the triple jump for the victory. Freshman Milo Knowles (San Jose, Calif.) was second in the high jump with a best height of 5-feet, 11.5-inches (1.82m) and classmate Scott Cameron (Dublin, Ohio) finished second in the pole vault (14-feet, 11-inches – 4.55m).
MIT also registered three other third place finishes in the field to round out the highlights for the men's track and field team. Senior Marshall Wentworth (Oakland, Calif.) jumped a height of 14-feet, 5.25-inches in the pole vault, junior Arinze Okeke (Hawthorne, Calif.) had a team-best leap of 22-feet, 1.75-inches (6.75m) in the triple jump and sophomore Cody Bratten (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) threw the discus a best distance of 137-feet, 11-inches (42.03m).
The Engineers are back in action next weekend when they host Bates College, Tufts University and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in MIT's first home outdoor meet of the 2016 season.
