
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Hosting its first outdoor meet of the 2016 season, the MIT men's track and field team finished first out of four teams with 227 points on Saturday afternoon at Steinbrenner Stadium. Behind MIT was RPI (157 points), Bates College (145) and Tufts University (132).
The Engineers won ten different events highlighted by the sprinters and the jumpers this weekend. Sophomore Livingston Albritten (Plano, Texas) and senior Michael Kaba (Jackson, N.J.) were the only two members of the team to win multiple individual events. Albritten started off the day with a time of 11.06 in the 100-meter dash and 22.34 in the 200-meter dash, while Kaba raced to a time of 15.37 in the 110-meter hurdles and 53.71 in the 400-meter hurdles.
Alongside Albritten in the 200m, senior States Lee (Charlotte, N.C.) took second in 22.88-seconds for second place and junior Danny Newman (St. Charles, Ill.) was third in 23.01-seconds, while Newman crossed the line second in the 400-meter dash in 49.26-seconds and senior Derek Barnes (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.) was third in the event in a time of 49.57. The 4x400-meter relay team also grabbed a first place finish with a time of 3:25.90.
Freshman Jarod Wilson (Newark, Del.) took the crown in the 800-meter run in a time of 1:54.98 and senior Benji Xie (El Dorado Hills, Calif.) rounded out the top performances on the track for MIT with third place in the 5000-meter run in 15:04.55.
In the field events, MIT had many great marks as the Engineers took first place in the pole vault, long jump and triple jump. In eight events in which MIT competed in, the Cardinal and Gray had finishers in the top-three position in five of them.
Freshman Scott Cameron (Dublin, Ohio) claimed the pole vault title with a best leap of 14-feet, 11-inches (4.55m), while senior Marshall Wentworth (Oakland, Calif.) was right behind him with a height of 13-feet, 11.75-inches (4.25m). In the long jump, junior Arinze Okeke (Hawthorne, Calif.) had the furthest leap at 21-feet, 11-inches (6.68m), while senior D. Carrington Motley (Pittsburgh, Pa.) was third at 21-feet, 2-inches (6.45m) and sophomore William Ruschel (Bethel Park, Pa.) was fourth at 21-feet (6.40m).
The Engineers also took four of the top-five spots in the triple jump highlighted by a win by Ruschel with a best leap of 45-feet, 10-inches (13.97m). Behind Ruschel was senior Angel Echevarria (Sacramento, Calif.) in second at 45-feet, 1.75-inches (13.76m), Motley in fourth at 43-feet, 11.25-inches (13.39m) and sophomore Ryan Prinster (Boulder, Colo.) in fifth at 43-feet, 1.5-inches (13.14m).
Sophomore Cody Bratten (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) had the best finish of the day for the throwers as he placed third in the discus throw with a distance of 145-feet, 0.5-inches (44.20m). MIT senior Alex Noakes (Watkinsville, Ga.) was fourth in the hammer throw at 150-feet, 1.75-inches (45.76m) and sophomore Luke Gray (North Hampton, N.H.)) took fourth in the javelin throw at 154-feet, 11.75-inches (47.23m).
MIT is back in action next Saturday, April 16 when the Engineers travel to Williams College for a dual meet with one of the top Division III teams in New England. Action is expected to get underway at 12:00 p.m.
