Westwood, Mass. (March 26) -- MIT seniors Chris Sweeney (Woodland Park, Wash.) and William Ruschel (Bethel Park, Pa.) have been named as the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Athletes of the Week for their performance at the California Collegiate Open in San Diego. Sweeney is the league's Track Athlete of the Week, while Ruschel is the Field Athlete of the Week. The Engineers are currently ranked No. 14 in the nation and finished sixth out of 14 teams with a total of 68 points.
Ruschel, a 2016 outdoor All-American, captured the triple jump with a leap of 46 feet, 11.75 inches as that jump ranks him fifth nationally. For Sweeney, he is currently ranked No. 11 in the country in the 400-meter hurdles as he finished fourth overall with a time of 54.16 seconds.
MIT is back in action next weekend as the Engineers travel to the Sam Howell Invitational at Princeton University on Friday, April 6th, along with at quad-meet on Saturday, April 7th with Bates, RPI and Tufts that will take place at Tufts.
