Engineers Capture Hawks Tournament Title

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The nationally-ranked No. 8 MIT men's volleyball team posted a 3-1 ledger en route to a first-place finish at the Hawks Tournament hosted by SUNY New Paltz this past weekend. On Saturday, the Engineers (8-1) swept No. 7 Baruch College (27-25, 25-23, 25-17) and Elms College (25-21, 25-11, 25-21). The next day, Tech dropped a five-set battle to New Paltz (25-21, 22-25, 17-25, 26-24, 15-9) but bounced back with a 29-27, 21-25, 25-21, 25-14 win over No. 14 Emmanuel College. Based on their outstanding performances, Matt Hohenberger was selected as the Tournament MVP while Ken Siebert earned a spot on the All-Tournament Team.

Against Baruch, Hohenberger tallied 10 kills, three blocks, and two aces as Siebert posted a team-high 12 kills to go along with four blocks. Patrick Vatterott notched five blocks, followed by four from Garrett Winther. Benson George chipped in three blocks and two aces while Jeremy Velazquez and Caine Jette both contributed five digs. Tim Lee finished with 27 assists and a team-best seven digs.

MIT showcased a balanced attack and a team hitting percentage of .333 in its victory over Elms. Hohenberger had nine kills on 13-errorless swings in addition to three blocks. Vatterott contributed nine kills and four digs as George totaled five kills, two blocks, and two aces. Siebert and Evan Wang rounded out the front row with eight and five kills, respectively, while Lee racked up 33 assists, seven digs, and two aces. Velazquez recorded five digs as Jette added four of his own. Daniel Sngiem bolstered the Engineers' serving performance with two aces.

In the Cardinal and Gray's battle with the host Hawks, Siebert compiled 20 kills, seven digs, and four blocks while Hohenberger led the way with 21 kills and three aces. Vatterott tallied eight kills, six blocks, and three aces as Winther posted nine kills, a .643 hitting percentage, and three blocks. Jette and Velazquez both collected nine digs while George contributed six kills and four blocks. Lee recorded 58 assists, 11 digs, and four blocks in the loss.

The Engineers saw four players reach double-digits in kills as the squad amassed a team hitting percentage of .421. Hohenberger paced the attack with 17 kills in addition to three blocks and two aces. Siebert notched 16 kills, five digs, two blocks, and two aces as Vatterott totaled 10 kills, a .667 hitting percentage, five blocks, four digs, and two aces. Winther contributed 10 kills while Lee picked up 49 assists, 13 digs, and two blocks. Sngiem and Jette strengthened the defense with six and five digs, respectively, as George added a pair of blocks.
