No. 12 Men’s Volleyball Selected Sixth In UVC Preseason Poll

Rochester, N.Y. (January 9) – In the United Volleyball Conference (UVC) preseason coaches' poll, which was released by the league earlier this afternoon, the MIT men's volleyball team was selected sixth.

Stevens Institute of Technology was picked first with seven first place votes, national runner-up SUNY New Paltz was selected second with one first place vote, NYU was third with one first place vote, Vassar College was fourth, Nazareth College was fifth, Elmira College was seventh, Sage was picked eighth, St. John Fisher College was ninth and Bard College rounded out the poll in tenth.

In 2017, the MIT men's volleyball team finished with a record of 20-10 and a mark of 4-4 in UVC play. The Engineers made their third appearance in the UVC postseason tournament and closed the year ranked No. 15 in the AVCA Division III national poll. MIT earned key wins over No. 1 Springfield, No. 5 Wentworth, No. 7 Kean, No. 11 Nazareth and No. 12 Lasell during the regular season.

The Engineers will be under the guidance of first-year head coach Todd Elwell and will return 2017 UVC All-Conference selections Yize Dong (Moraga, Calif.), Skyler Kaufman (Needham, Mass.) and Tavish Smith (Laguna Beach, Calif.) as well as UVC All-Academic Team honoree Andrew Hall (Lynnfield, Mass.).

MIT will open the 2018 season with a tri-match on the road against Emmanuel College and Alvernia University in Boston on Saturday, January 20 at noon. The Engineers then will open their home slate of games the following week with a non-conference match against Regis College on Tuesday, January 23 at 6:00 p.m.
