Rochester, N.Y. (January 11) - The MIT men's volleyball team has been selected to finish fifth this season as the United Volleyball Conference (UVC) office revealed the 2019 preseason poll earlier this morning.
Defending league champion Stevens Institute of Technology received six of a possible ten first place votes and topped the poll this winter, while NYU was picked second with three first place votes and New Paltz was selected third with one first place vote. Just ahead of MIT was Vassar and behind the Engineers was Nazareth. Elmira, St. John Fisher, Sage and Bard rounded out the 2019 UVC preseason poll in that order.
In 2018, the MIT men's volleyball team finished with a record of 16-9 overall and a mark of 4-5 in UVC contests. The Engineers notched four wins over nationally-ranked teams including No. 7 NYU, No. 13 Wentworth, No. 14 Eastern Mennonite and No. 15 Elmira a year ago.
The Engineers are slated to play eight nationally-ranked teams in 2019 including No. 1 Springfield, No. 2 Stevens, No. 5 New Paltz, No. 6 NYU, No. 7 Dominican (Ill.), No. 8 Cal Lutheran, No. 10 Vassar and No. 14 Benedictine (Ill.) as well as two schools receiving votes in the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Division III national rankings in Endicott and Rivier.
MIT will be under the guidance of second-year head coach Todd Elwell and will return reigning UVC Libero/Defensive Specialist of the Year and AVCA Second Team All-American Thomas Nelson (San Ramon, Calif.) as well as UVC All-Conference honorees Yize Dong (Moraga, Calif.) and Skyler Kaufman (Needham, Mass.).
MIT will open the 2019 campaign on January 23 with a road match at Regis College.
