Cambridge, Mass. (February 5)– For the second straight week, a student-athlete from the MIT men's volleyball has been honored by the United Volleyball Conference (UVC). This week, junior Thomas Nelson (San Ramon, Calif.) was named as the UVC Athlete of the Week after leading the Engineers to a victory over Rivier University last Wednesday.
Nelson powered MIT to a victory in its only match of the week as he posted a season-high 16 kills, hit .448, and registered six service aces which tied the single match program record for most in a four-set match. Defensively, the junior tallied 10 digs and a block assist to lead the Engineers to a four-set win over Rivier University last Wednesday, the team's first victory over the Raiders since the 2013 campaign.
MIT, which has started the season at 5-0, opens UVC play this weekend on the road. The Engineers will play at NYU on Friday, February 8 at 7:00 pm before heading to New Jersey to play the No. 2 ranked Stevens University Ducks and Baruch College on Saturday, February 9 at 11:00 am and 1:00 pm, respectively.
