Bridgeport, Pa. (September 10) – After leading the MIT water polo team, ranked fifth in the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Division III national preseason poll, to a 3-1 record at the 2019 Bruno Classic over the weekend sophomore Miller Geschke (Los Altos, Calif.) was named as the Northeast Water Polo Conference (NWPC) Player of the Week.
This marks Geschke's first career NWPC Player of the Week selection after his breakout year as a first-year which saw him earn All-Conference Second Team Honors and First Team All-America accolades in 2018.
Over the weekend, Geschke posted a total of 16 goals and eight assists for 24 points as he led the Engineers to their best start to a season since 2015 after going 3-1 at the Bruno Classic. The sophomore added eight steals and three blocks as well as four sprint wins against the four teams MIT played in Providence and Cambridge.
Geschke matched a single-game career high with six goals in a 23-14 win over Wagner and also posted four goals against No. 16 Bucknell, four against Division III No. 4 Cal Lutheran and two against McKendree. In the game against Wagner, he added four assists and four steals to his stat line. In his final game of the weekend against the Kingsmen of Cal Lutheran, the sophomore registered the game winning goal with one second left to play as he lifted the Engineers to a 7-6 win in a crucial Division III matchup.
MIT (3-1) is off next weekend but will return to action in two weeks with three matches at the Connecticut College Invitational on Saturday, September 21. The Engineers will play an exhibition match against Cerritos College before playing the host Camels at Penn State Behrend all on the same day.
