MASON, Ohio – Led by senior Spencer Wenck (Monument, Colo.) the No. 8 MIT men's cross country team finished eighth at the 2014 NCAA Division III Cross Country Championship on Saturday afternoon at Kings Island Golf Center, hosted by Wilmington College. Tech's eighth place finish – out of 32 teams – matched their team's performance from the 1985 season.
Wenck, who crossed the finish line first for the Engineers, recorded a top-five finish, placing fourth out of 280 runners. His fourth place performance matched Dan Feldman '02, who led the Cardinal and Gray to a 20th place finish in 2001. Wenck clocked a time of 23.58.6, finishing just 14 seconds behind St. Olaf senior Grant Wintheiser (Sartell, Minn.), who won the race in 23.44.9.
Freshman Colin Godwin (Cary, N.C.) finished second for the Cardinal and Gray, clocking a time of 24.30.9 for a 22nd place finish. Sophomore Matthew Deyo (Syracuse, N.Y.) placed 25th overall with a time of 24.32.1, while senior Allen Leung (Arcadia, Calif.) finished 121st, clocking a time of 25.29.5.
Senior Benji Xie (El Dorado Hills, Calif.) rounded out the top five with a 145th finish, recording a time of 25.35.6. Sophomore Rory Beyer (San Mateo, Calif.) was the sixth Engineer to finish and, finished 185th, registering a time of 25.49.4., while senior Matt Jordan (Matthews, N.C.) placed 190th with a time of 25.50.6.
