Sud Scores 17 as MIT Rallies Past Albertus Magnus, 54-46

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – A 20-5 run that spanned 12 minutes in the second half helped power MIT to a 54-46 victory over host Albertus Magnus College on Saturday. Aparna Sud paced the Engineers (2-3) with a game and season-high 17 points to go along with six rebounds and two steals.

The Falcons raced out to a 15-5 lead after seven minutes elapsed in the contest. Sparked by a layup from Sally Simpson, MIT went on an 11-2 run which brought it within one (17-16) at the 8:22 mark. The Cardinal and Gray stayed close as a three-pointer by Sud evened the score at 25 with 2:34 left in the frame. An Albertus Magnus put-back gave it a 27-25 edge that would hold through halftime.

The Falcons opened the second stanza with a 9-3 spurt that resulted in a 36-28 advantage with 14:46 on the clock. A jumper by Anna Merrifield ignited the Engineers’ pivotal run which made the score 48-41 with 2:46 remaining in regulation. Albertus Magnus drained a three-pointer on its next trip down the court but it would get no closer as MIT converted six of its eight free-throw attempts to seal the win.

Kristen Whaley posted 10 rebounds, nine points, and three steals while Lauren Sascha Burton tallied six points, four assists, and two steals. Merrifield and Simpson both contributed six points as Merrifield collected six boards.

For the game, MIT enjoyed a 14-10 edge in points in the paint and an 18-11 advantage in points off turnovers. In the second half, the Engineers led the way in second-chance points (10-4) and forced 13 Falcon turnovers while surrendering eight of their own.
