Babson Subdues MIT, 59-29

BABSON PARK, Mass. – Babson College used a 16-3 run over the final 7:38 of the first half to pull away from visiting MIT on Wednesday night, as the Beavers went on to defeat the Engineers, 59-29, in a New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) contest at Staake Gymnasium. With their ninth win in a row, the Beavers upped their overall record to 17-3 and remained unbeaten in the conference at 13-0. Meanwhile, MIT fell to 4-15 overall and 2-11 in the NEWMAC.

Babson was led by Kathleen King, who scored 12 points, grabbed eight boards, and dished out four assists, as Sarah Collins who finished with 10 points, five boards, and three blocked shots. Michelle Kenel chipped in eight points and three assists, Damisi Adewumi amassed six points and six caroms, and Nicki Wurdeman added four points and seven rebounds.

Aparna Sud paced the Cardinal and Gray with 10 points and five rebounds. Sally Simpson posted five points and five boards while Lauren Sascha Burton notched four points and five assists. Stephanie Cooke contributed four points, three rebounds, and a team-high two steals.

Babson appeared to be pulling away in the opening eight minutes, building a 15-6 lead after a jumper by Adewumi with 12:19 remaining. However, Sud knocked down a three-pointer to spark a 7-0 MIT run as the Engineers pulled back to within two (15-13) with 7:54 on the clock.

The Beavers would control the contest from that point on, going on a 16-3 run, including 10 straight points to close the period, for a commanding 31-16 lead at the break. MIT would get no closer than 15 the rest of the way as Babson earned the 59-29 victory.
