WPI Edges Out Women’s Basketball, 46-41

WORCESTER, Mass.Tamara Pena's potential game-tying three pointer with 10 seconds remaining in regulation rattled out, resulted in a jump ball that gave WPI possession and allowed it to seal the 46-41 win with two free throws in a NEWMAC women's basketball game on Wednesday night. Lauren Hannmann tallied a game-high 15 points for WPI along with a team-best seven rebounds, two assists, and three steals. Margo Batie paced MIT (6-9, 2-7 NEWMAC) with 12 points, four rebounds, and two steals.

Melissa Kuhn chipped in nine points and six boards, while Elle Fontaine added seven points including 5-of-6 from the free throw line for WPI.

Pena finished with nine points and three steals as Rachel Hunt totaled nine points and nine rebounds. Lauren Sascha Burton tallied nine rebounds, three assists, and two steals while Anna Merrifield posted six points, five boards, and four assists.

WPI (12-3, 8-1), winners of seven straight, never trailed in the first half and led by as many as 12 with 2:16 left in the frame, before MIT used a flurry of three pointers to cut the deficit before the break. Batie struck first at 1:11 and Merrifield added a pair of treys to pull the visitors within two at the break (22-20). WPI held MIT to just seven field goals in the first half with five of them coming from behind the arc.

MIT carried the momentum into the second stanza as it built a 30-24 advantage with 12:53 on the clock. WPI responded with a 19-5 run that spanned the next nine minutes. However, MIT countered with a run of its own to pull within three (44-41) with 35 seconds remaining as it capitalized on WPI misses from the free throw line. The hosts missed the front end of three one-and-ones allowing MIT to close the gap. Following Pena's near-miss three point attempt and the jump ball, MIT fouled Fontaine who sealed the win with two free throws.

Both teams return to the hardwood on Saturday for conference road games. WPI heads to New London, Conn. for a 2:00 p.m. contest versus Coast Guard while MIT ventures back to Worcester to take on Clark at 1:00 p.m.
