Indianapolis, Ind. (February 26) – After winning the first NEWMAC Championship in the history of the women's basketball program, MIT learned it will square off with nationally-ranked No. 17 Marymount University in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament at the University of Rochester on Friday, March 2. This will be the first between the Engineers and the Saints.
As the No. 5 seed in the NEWMAC Tournament, MIT (18-9) defeated No. 4 Springfield College, 66-55, in the quarterfinals last Wednesday. The Engineers then traveled to top-seeded Smith College where they earned a 64-51 victory in the semifinals on Saturday. The next day, MIT battled No. 2 WPI for a 54-50 win in the title game.
The Saints (24-3) will be making their 20th appearance in the NCAA Tournament after defeating No. 15 Christopher Newport University, 61-60, for their 13th Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) championship on Saturday. Marymount advanced to the finals after a 50-31 win over the University of Mary Washington last Thursday.
The second game of the day will feature the host No. 15 Yellowjackets (21-4), who were the runner-ups in the University Athletic Association, and Stevens Institute of Technology (15-12), which won the Empire 8 conference championship.
