Women’s Crew Wraps up Fall Season at Foot of the Charles

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – MIT’s women’s crew teams wrapped up their fall schedules over the weekend, as both the lightweight and openweight squads competed in the Foot of the Charles regatta on Saturday. The event, which emphasizes novice eight and varsity four crews, was held on a course similar to last month’s Head of the Charles, beginning at the Riverside Boathouse and ending 2.3 miles upstream at the same finish line as the head races.

The openweight women entered three boats in the varsity four race, one of which wound up withdrawing due to illness. However, the two remaining crews fared very well, with the “A” boat finishing 20th out of 43 entries (14:53.0), Tech’s best result in this event since 2006. The second MIT boat placed 33rd overall with a time of 15:30.3.

The lightweight entry in the varsity four race also had a strong race, finishing 32nd (15:26.4), competing against both openweight and lightweight boats in the open field, an improvement on MIT’s 34thplace showing a year ago.

In the novice eight event, the openweight’s top crew overcame a few early setbacks to finish in seventh place out of 23 boats. The “A” crew caught a few crabs around the Eliot Bridge turn but recovered nicely to post a time of 14:46.5 and earn MIT’s best result since a third-place showing in 2008. The second openweight novice eight had its best finish since 2004 with its 16th-place standing (15:48.6).

Also in the novice eight race, the Cardinal and Gray finished second among lightweight crews and 18th overall, just behind the team from Radcliffe and 48 seconds faster than the boat from the University of Massachusetts.

The lightweight team had Tech’s lone entry in the varsity eight race and finished in eighth place with a time of 15:13.2.

The Tech women will now switch to dry-land training for the remainder of the fall semester. The teams will be back on the water in January, during their annual winter training trip to Florida.
