Lightweight 8 Takes Silver at Dad Vail Regatta

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – After earning a bronze medal at the prestigious Dad Vail Regatta last year, the MIT lightweight varsity 8 crew moved up a notch this year, earning a silver medal on the waters of the Schuylkill River this afternoon.

MIT was in lane four as it faced off against crews from Bucknell, Purdue and Tulsa. A quarter of the way through the race, the Engineers stood third behind Bucknell and Tulsa as it cleared the Strawberry Mansion Bridge. The Crimson and Grey then started to move on the Golden Hurricane crew, catching them at the 1,000-meter mark and then pulling away to claim the silver medal, crossing the line less than 10 seconds behind Bucknell and a little less than seven seconds ahead of Tulsa.

Four of this year's crew were part of last year's bronze medal performance, junior coxswain Emily Chen (Nashua, N.H.), senior co-captains Kathleen Inman (Indianapolis, Ind.) and Lauren Ayers (Portland, Maine) and sophomore Katie Gorick (Ashburn, Va.). A pair of freshmen in the crew, Anne Kim (Montclair, N.J.) and Madison Noteware (Bryn Mawr, Pa.), has earned medals on the famous racecourse in championship racing before – both having earned them as high school rowers in the prestigious Stotesbury Cup Regatta.  For freshman seven seat, Ella Branch (Charlotte, N.C.), senior stroke seat Chandler Burfield (Naples, Fla.) and senior three seat Anne Warren (Ann Arbor, Mich.) it was their first championship medals rowing on the Schuykill, with Burfield and Warren earning their first-ever medals.

MIT also had a varsity 4 entry in the regatta that raced in a preliminary heat on Friday. The Engineers finished fourth out of six crews, edging Bryant by less than a second and finishing less than two seconds behind Tulsa for third. MIT did not qualify for the finals, however, as just the top two crews moved on to race on Saturday.

MIT has one final event on its 2012-13 schedule, the IRA Regatta that will be held June 1 on Lake Natoma in Sacramento, California.
