Openweight Varsity 8 Named as Patriot League Boat of the Week

Center Valley, Pa. (March 27) -- In the first Boat of the Week release by the Patriot League, the MIT women's openweight varsity 8 boat was honored as the league's Boat of the Week for their performance vs. Coast Guard on Saturday.

In the team's first race of the spring season, the Engineers crossed in a time of 7:17.6 over the 2K race on the Charles River to defeat the Bears by a 35-second margin.

The MIT crew consisted of coxswain Vanessa Wong (Boise, Idaho), freshman Grace Gardner (Saint Paul, Minn.), sophomore Premila Rowles (Cupertino, Calif.), senior Abbey Diener (Draper, Utah), junior Tal Gilad (Horsham, Pa.), junior Caitlin McCandler (St. Louis Park, Minn.), sophomore Ciara Mulcahy (Roanoke, Va.), junior Ellie Brewer (McLean, Va.) and freshman Annika Heuser (Piedmont, Calif.).

The Engineers are back in action on Saturday, March 31st as the team takes on Boston College on the Charles River. Those start times will be announced as soon as they are available.

The Patriot League is in its third decade of academic and athletic achievement, continually demonstrating that student-athletes can excel at both academics and athletics without sacrificing high standards.
